Jim and Carol's connection to UCLA runs deep. As a child, Carol attended UCLA football games with her father and was a student at the on-campus elementary school now known as the UCLA Lab School. She and Jim met as UCLA undergraduates. Three of their four children went on to attend UCLA.

The Collinses have been active volunteers and donors to UCLA since they made their first gift to the campus in 1963. They have generously supported a variety of programs, spanning education, medicine, business, the humanities and athletics. The couple are honorary fellows of the UCLA College as well as life members of the UCLA Alumni Association and UCLA Fund. Jim was named UCLA's Edward A. Dickson Alumnus of the Year in 1982.

From 1982 to 1988, Jim chaired The UCLA Campaign; he is now a member of the executive committee for the $4.2 billion UCLA Centennial Campaign, which is scheduled to conclude in 2019. He also served as president of the Alumni Association board of directors, and has held several other leadership positions for the association.

Jim and Carol received the UCLA Medal on May 6, 2016, UCLA's highest honor, for their remarkable contributions to the restaurant industry and more than six decades of philanthropy and leadership that has benefited myriad organizations, including UCLA. The UCLA Medal was established in 1979 and is the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by UCLA. It is awarded to those who have not only earned academic and professional acclaim, but whose works demonstrates the highest ideals of UCLA. Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, former senator George Mitchell, Nobel laureate Elinor Ostrom, Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, UCLA alumna and former astronaut Anna L. Fisher and basketball coaching legend John Wooden have been among the recipients. The Collinses' unwavering commitment to UCLA was further reinforced at the ceremony with the formal announcement that two endowed chairs that had been funded by the couple had been filled by faculty members at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

Jim Collins became active in the YMCA in the mid-1950s as a member who valued fitness and healthy living. His YMCA Board service began at the Westside Family YMCA where he chaired virtually every committee including the branch's successful building drive. In 1977, he was elected to the Metropolitan Board and was cited for the Golden Book of Distinguished Service that same year. Under Jim's leadership as Chairman of the Metropolitan Board of Directors for 1986 to 1990, the Ketchum-Downtown YMCA, the Santa Clarita Valley YMCA and the Weingart East Los Angeles YMCA all opened, expanded and flourished.

The Westside Family Y has been so successful for the past 45 years that it has outgrown its current location on Sawtelle and La Grange. The new 65,000 sq. ft. facility will be opening in Spring 2017 on the campus of University High School, the school that Carol had attended, thanks to the generosity of Jim and Carol Collins and the Katz family. The new Y will be named the Collins & Katz Family YMCA. Jim is currently one of the longest serving members of the Westside YMCA's Board of Managers.

Jim's entire family has been involved in the Y and grew up learning about the importance of philanthropy. All four of his children were part of the Y. His two sons were in the Guides Program. His daughter, Cathy Hession, was a program director and is currently a member of the Westside YMCA's Board of Managers and a Golden Book Award recipient. His granddaughter, Natalie Hession, participated in the Westside YMCA's Youth & Government program and as a summer camp counselor.

For his outstanding service and contributions as a leading Y member, Director, board member, volunteer, donor and community leader, James A. Collins is honored with the LA Metropolitan YMCA Director Emeritus Award.

Jim Collins got involved with the Boys & Girls Club of Venice in the late 1960's when Dave Mandell, past founder and director, asked him if he could provide lunches to the kids. Jim agreed and gave the kids hamburger lunches once a week. Jim saw a real need in the area for programs to keep high-risk youth off the streets. After the 1994 Northridge earthquake condemned the Club's original facility, the Board of Directors began a capital campaign to build a new building. This is when Jim stepped in and made a game changing pledge to make this happen.

The project started in September of 1994 and on September 22, 1999 the new Boys & Girls Club of Venice James A. Collins Youth Center was open for business. Jim served on the Board of Governors and Board of Directors of the club. His daughter, Cathy Hession, joined the Board of Directors in 1999 and is still very active and involved in the club.

The Collins College of Hospitality Management is the first and largest hotel and restaurant management bachelor's degree program on the West Coast and is consistently ranked among the nation's premier hospitality management programs. The college started in 1973 with 30 students and two faculty members as a department in the College of Business Administration. The department was formed in response to the demand for qualified management professionals due to the hospitality industry's explosive growth.

In the 1980s, the program grew significantly in terms of students and facilities with an ambitious faculty team and wide support from Cal Poly Pomona leadership, the California State University and industry leaders. The growth allowed the program to separate from the College of Business Administration to become the Center for Hospitality Management in 1986.

In 1990, thanks to a successful capital campaign, the Center for Hospitality Management opened its first building, which includes classrooms, offices, kitchen laboratories and the Restaurant at Kellogg Ranch. In 1991, the center became the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management.

In 1999, the program was named The Collins School of Hospitality Management in recognition a $10 million pledge from Carol and Jim Collins. Their donations and donations from other industry supporters, enabled the school to build two additional buildings.

On June 13, 2008, Cal Poly Pomona then President Michael Ortiz led a signing ceremony to designate the school a college. This designation places The Collins College among only a handful nationwide and provides the necessary infrastructure to expand its degree program and departmentalize. It remains the only hospitality management college on the West Coast.

Building from its renowned undergraduate program, The Collins College launched a Master of Science in Hospitality Management in the fall of 2010. The graduate program is the only hospitality management degree program of its kind in California.

Today with nearly 30 faculty members serving more than 1,000 ethnically diverse students, The Collins College offers a rigorous education firmly rooted in hospitality management theories and real-world applications. A customized curriculum prepares students for careers in hotel resort management, restaurant management, club management, culinary product development, tourism management and special events/meeting planning.
